I never expected to say this, but China has actually produced a next generation phone. Xiaomi, the company that was accused of copying Apple’s phone designs has launched a has a ridiculous amount of innovation. That’s right 91% -basically almost the entire surface is screen. I dare say this is as close to bezel-less phones as we can get.
The top bezel of smartphones contains 3 essential components- a call receiver, proximity sensor and a camera. Thus getting rid of the top bezel is an engineering feat, and it does come with some compromises along the way.
Xiaomi managed to replace the receive with a piezoelectric acoustic driver in the body of the phone. This allows you to hear via small vibrations coming from the phone body.
Next up is the proximity sensor that turns of the screen when it detects it is near the face. Xiaomi developed an ultrasonic sensor that is built in the body of the phone.
Finally the last component is the hardest to replace – the camera. This is where the biggest compromise came. Xiaomi moved the top camera to the bottom of the phone. Yes, the camera is now placed awkwardly on the bottom right hand corner.
One last thing is the body of the phone. It features a unibody ceramic shell. The same ceramic shell which is used in apple’s new iwatches. It’s extremely hard and amazingly beautiful.
The phone is actually in production and goes on sale at the start of November. Some lucky people managed to get their hands on the phone.
