The Xiaomi Mi 5 might not look like a biscuit, but it sure snaps like one! Youtube user JerryRigEverything did a bend test on the Mi 5 and to his surprise found that the phone snapped in half with his bare hands. The back of the phone is in 2 pieces and the screen is completely ruined:
The phone snapped at the battery joint, which is the weakest point of the phone.
When compared to other phones, 3 other current points snapped (eg Nexus 6P) but 17 others survived the bend test. JerryRigEverything attributes the weakness of the Mi 5 to the single weak aluminum back-plate. Stronger phones have 2 plates instead of one, and these plates are usually made of a stronger series of aluminium. This probably why the Xiaomi M5 is 16% lighter than the Galaxy S7 (Weight of Mi5 is 129g vs S7 weight of 152g).
Apples iphone 6 plus also famously failed the bend test, but it did not snap in half like the Mi 5.
The other tests passed with flying colors – the screen is very scratch resistant and burn proof.
All this means that you probably shouldn’t place the Mi 5 in your back pocket, and if you do, you should probably buy a case for it.
